The great plate search and other things

...

We bought a Christmas tree yesterday. As I threaded loops for 27 baubles from M's mother (to replace the ones that were stolen from our previous flat by the mean burglars of 15 December 2006) and hung them on the branches I realised that this was my last single Christmas. Next year we shall be married. Next year the annual argument over which tree to buy and how to get it home (M carried it) will be a married argument although we are both hoping marriage means we won't argue over how best to carry and then stand a tree. I suspect this is not true but I will try my best.

Our tree might be beautiful but it does have rather a curve to it. The base of the trunk is flat and standing upright in the dish of water. The top of the tree leans back by almost a foot, giving it the amusing sensation that it is just about to fall over, when in fact it is perfectly 'upright' and as steady as anything... I shall post some photos later tonight when I have mustered the strength to tie thread loops for the rest of the baubles.

In other exciting news, we have decided to try and play the non-communicative supplier at her own game: purchase the crockery ourselves. Yes, instead of paying almost £800 to rent it, we have set ourselves a challenge. My mother, M's mother and I will attempt to collect 1/3 of the crockery each from charity shops and junk shops over the next few months. Given that the brief was "pretty, Grannie's tea party style floral crockery as opposed to something you would find in a church kitchen" I am unsure as to what we will get, but hopefully it will create the effect we desire. And afterwards, should we need to serve afternoon tea for 120, we will have all the crockery and napkins and tablecloths we need...

I also finally made an umbrella decision and ordered myself a peacock feathered one. We may be marrying in June but this is England. Although traditionally the rain only pours on the Glastonbury weekend (around about the 25th June) and the Wimbledon fortnight (last 2 weeks of June, usually), English summers are nothing if not unpredictable so I think it is best we are prepared for all weathers. Hence another recent purchase was a cashmere twinset with pearl fastenings (another bargain - £195 reduced to £25 at the Couture Gallery) just in case it is not only wet but freezing too.

I was thinking of ordering umbrellas for the bridesmaids too but having chosen bright dresses I think patterned umbrellas may well have been overkill. Also, we are attempting to do as much of the wedding as possible without buying things new or, if new, on sale. So far, aside from the umbrella, we have achieved it as my shoes were 75% off in the summer sale and the bridesmaids dresses were reduced by 50% that week too. Even our stationery was bought from Smythsons on a day when everything was reduced by 20%. Obviously somethings have to be new: I propose buying new underwear, for example, flowers really have to be 'new', and the stamp I commissioned for the invitations was also new, but in general, our ethical ethos is being applied across the whole wedding.

I was thinking I would make something to wear in my hair, but maybe I will just wear this instead! I am finding it impossible to reach a decision, about anything...

Designer Wedding Show

...
Temperley London Veil (Image by M)
...

Popped down to the Designer Wedding Show this afternoon to have a look for some ideas. Rather unimpressed by the whole thing really; a few good ideas but mostly filled with people trying to interest you in things you didn't want.

There was one thing which I did very much like though, and she is supposed to be sending me some images. If she does, I will post them, as they are an unusual but lovely idea.

Emily London: Couture Milliner

...
When I first started looking for my wedding dress I thought I would wear a vintage gown so I went straight to my favourite vintage shop (and old neighbour in my beloved Primrose Hill): Shikasuki. As you know by now, I didn't end up buying a vintage gown but I did fall in love with the millinery on exhibition there... hats by Emily-London. Emily offered to make me a hat/headpiece for my wedding which I could commission to include peacock feathers and I am seriously considering taking her up on the option. That or commissioning a hat to go with my going-away dress which I could wear to the many weddings we are attending later in the summer.

I wanted to share with you some of her designs - I have chosen some of my favourites - but she also does custom made commissions (see the butterflies below) and hires vintage pieces for weddings as well. Enjoy.

In fact, Emily says: "Having a bespoke hat or headpiece privately commissioned, particularly for your wedding day, is a wonderfully enjoyable process from the initial concept to the final stitch. It is a delightful and original way to have a unique and special piece designed and made exclusively for you. As a milliner, private commissions are my most enjoyable pieces to make. They enable me creatively to interpret the client's concept and then engage with her throughout the making process so that the end result goes beyond even her first hopes and expectations. The feeling of a customer taking her hat or headpiece away, knowing that she absolutely adores it and that it will be privately treasured forever, brings with it for me a wonderful sense of pride and creative energy".

More bridesmaids ideas

Well, if we're holding the wedding in England, in June, it's bound to rain. Perhaps I should get the bridesmaids one of these each...

Or what about one of these?

Ring Pillows...

...

... are not something that I have considered but these are very sweet and made by fellow blogger Brooklyn Bride. As it is September I have chosen an autumnal colour to show you and don't you think they are pretty. Beautiful though they are, we are not having any flower girls and I just can't see the Best Man producing a small cushion from his pocket. I think we shall just stick to a ring box. Boring but I need to limit the things I have to think about. If my boy wants to choose or to make one then he can organise it (so perhaps I should send him the link to Brooklyn Bride's shop!)

Colour Palette Inspiration

Images from www.colorstrology.com/ (edited and chosen by me)

...

Nostalgia Rose, Tigerlily, Bright Chartreuse and Paisley Purple are supposedly the colours which identify with my birthday, my boy's birthday, the date of our wedding and the date that we met, according to Colorstrology. Unfortunately they don't go so well together although their names are beautiful. If I thought I could get away with naming a baby girl (should I be so lucky to have one after we get married) I would call her Tigerlily. I don't think I can so Poppy is my current favourite.

...

However, Veridian Green, Horizon Blue, Cornflower Blue & Celestial are much more like my chosen colour palette: peacocky blues, purples and greens. All colours inspired by my beloved peacock feathers and hopefully to be used across bridesmaids dress details, my headpiece, ribbons and table decorations. Not sure what the 14 or 24 September nor 3 or 28 December mean to us but perhaps we shall see...

Decoration Ideas

I really like the idea of the tables being decorated with hand picked flowers in a selection of vintage vases and glasses. How wonderful to have an excuse to go round charity shops for the next year and build up a collection of beautiful glasses: they would last a lifetime. Not entirely sure how it fits with peacock feathers but I am sure we can work something out.

You & Your Wedding

...
...
I bought my first wedding magazine on Tuesday. It ended up sitting on the kitchen floor until this evening when I found myself at a loose end. It is the first night in that I have had for a very long time and I have spent it sitting on the sofa eyeing the wedding magazine whilst watching a DVD box set of All Creatures Great and Small which I borrowed from someone several months ago but haven't had a spare moment to watch.

The magazine is worse than any normal monthly female magazine. I know now why I only read Vogue with occasional dips into Tatler or Country Living. Apparently I need to make a 'mood board' so that I can condense my theme and ideas into viable options. So says sister-in-law-to-be, fashion designer and recent bride. So I have been cutting out images that I like for inspiration. I have managed 3 dresses (one of them being the Temperly one below) and the image above of a car in addition to an article on Moroccan Honeymoons which I didn't pull out as it didn't tell me anything I don't already know. Still, nice to see our destination in a magazine I suppose.

How fabulous does this sound: a roll top bath freestanding in the bedroom with a separate wet room bathroom, a king sized bed with Egyptian cotton sheets and towels. Continental breakfast in bed the next morning. Just wonderful for exhausted newly weds...

The Most Beautiful Confetti

...
On Monday M and I dropped in to see my parents on our way home from a festival and over supper started to discuss the aspects of the wedding that were important to us. I had already decided that my shoes were more important to me than my dress, which is why I chose to buy my shoes first and then find a dress which goes with them. Which is working so well at the moment since I cannot work out where to start looking for a dress, any dress. Except vintage shops of course, but I have not found anything perfect there yet. Anyway, my mother seemed to think that confetti was not an important aspect of the wedding, or at least not worth including in the budget. I disagree. When M and I step out of the chapel as a married couple, I would like to be showered with the most beautiful scented rose petals, even if I have to provide them myself. Wasteful? Perhaps, but they are natural, and for once in my life it would be nice to be just a little bit decadent. And then I saw these petals and the hat boxes that they come packaged in and I fell in love: petals for the day, the most gorgeous green box to keep. Did I mention that I have more than a bit of a thing for beautiful boxes and packaging?
